Beyond arch support, I didn’t tend to care about what I wore on my feet all that much.

But as the mud began to climb up my knee-high boots, and the wet ground sucked my feet deeper and deeper—making every step more difficult—I wished I’d worn something more suitable. But then again, I hadn’t expected to be dumped in the middle of the Fourth Circle.

Neither Pest nor I knew where we were going, but walking forward was better than staying still.

We kept moving through the strange forest. Occasionally, we came to another puddle of water, unconnected to a river or stream. Stagnant. The feeling of being watched never lifted.

I didn’t know how long we walked, but my thigh muscles had begun to ache, and the telltale zaps in the deep tissue reminded me that I didn’t have any medication with me. If my legs stopped working properly in the middle of a Hell swamp, I didn’t know how I’d be able to defend myself.

We followed the shimmer of light hitting the water through the trees until Pest, and I reached the edge of a beautiful lake that stretched as far as the eye could see. The color of polished jade, without movement on the surface. It felt like I could have stepped out, and the water’s surface would support my weight—like a jade green ice-skating rink.

In the distance, a rotting castle overlooked the lake. Perched on a cliff’s edge, with missing walls, moss stretched over the stone as if the landscape was determined to claim the castle, ripping it apart and returning it to nature.

Once the trees had parted, I could see the sky. The rolling grey clouds folded over each other like waves.

Pest and I exchanged glances, wordlessly deciding to begin the journey to the castle.

Pest moved first, and I stepped after, peeling my sinking boots from the mud.

I screamed as the ground gave way under my feet.

Pest’s hand remained on mine, and darkness swallowed my vision. My stomach lurched to my throat as I landed on top of Pest, earning a grunt as my elbow jammed into his ribs.

I crawled over his body, hands pawing for the edge of the hole. Trying to find a foothold in the darkness.

Pest rolled to his feet and did the same. “Are you hurt?”

I shook my head, blinking as my eyes struggled to adjust to the darkness. “My legs hurt, but that’s normal.”

“The curse.” He surmised.

“Yeah.”

Pest hammered the walls of our dirt prison, and the only light came from the burst of magic with every blow as he tried to punch his way out of the hole.

“What do we do?” I asked, wincing as a spasm claimed my legs.

“We wait until whoever laid the trap comes back,” Pest said ominously. “And when they come, I’ll wither their insides and rot their bones to dust.”
