CANADA, SUMMER 1759

“I heard that Pikestaff is putting the Grenadier companies together when we land.” Chisholm was usually first with the gossip. “He wants a striking force of the best men to use as a hammer for Quebec.”

MacKim nodded. “So the Grenadiers of the 78th will be fighting beside Webb’s?”

“That’s right.” Chisholm was cleaning his uniform. “I thought you might be interested. If you get friendly with one of our Grenadiers, you might hear where he’s going. Then you’ll be able to track Webb’s if you’re still intending fulfilling your damn fool oath.”

Until I kill these two murderers, my life is not my own. “I will not break my word.” MacKim stood up and pushed through the crowded deck toward Dingwall.

“Sergeant Dingwall,” he asked, “what are the chances of me transferring to the Grenadiers?”

Dingwall scanned MacKim from the top of his head to his boots. “You want to join the Grannies, do you? How tall are you, MacKim?”

“Five foot seven, Sergeant.”MacKim pulled himself erect to try and add inches to his height.

“Come back when you’re three inches taller and five years older and you might have a chance,” Dingwall said. “The Grenadiers are the tallest and oldest men in the regiment, not the smallest. You stick with the Light Bobs, boy, where you belong.”

“You’re a fool, Hugh,” Chisholm told him amicably, passing over his water bottle. “You’d not like the Grenadiers at all. They’re big men with big mouths. Here, try this grog. Harriette is friendly with one of the sailors.”

I’ll have to find another way.
