Marcus stumbled backward through the trash that littered Darrylâs apartment and reached for his phone. He was done with this shit. Enough was enough.
WHAM!
The insane manâs pipe slammed into the door and the entire door rattled in its frame.
With shaking fingers Marcus dialed 911 and waited for the call to connect.
It was stupid to come here. He should have listened to his father. He stared at his phone when his phone blinked and the screen read: CALL FAILED.
WHAM!
The pipe struck the door again and the door shook, raining splinters of wood into the apartment.
Marcus took a step back examining his phone screen.
NO SIGNAL dominated the screen all in caps.
Fuck
âWhat the hell is he doing?â
Marcus spun in place and nearly dropped his phone. The light from his camera swept over Darryl standing four feet away. His eyes were glazed in opioids and took in the scene as if in a dream state. His actions were slow and deliberate. Even the gun in his hand drifted from left to right in a slow arc.
âDarryl!â Marcus said, stepping out the firing line.
âMarcus?â Darryl said, âAre you doing that?â
Darryl gestured to the door as the end of the pipe hit the door again, biting deeper into the wood this time. The old man was raving wildly now, his voice hoarse and unintelligible.
âNo, man.â Marcus told him. âNo. We gotta get out of here. Now.â
But Darryl wasnât listening, his pupils were the size of beach balls and they bounced right over Marcus to the noise at the door.
The gunshots roared and the flash of the muzzle lit up the tiny apartment in three brilliant strobes. Marcus fell to the floor covering his head in a pile of take out containers, dirty clothes and old newspapers. The gunfire was over in seconds, but the echoes ricocheted off the crumbling walls again and again.
âWhat the hell are you doing?â Marcus said. âWhat did you do?â
Marcus ran to the door and peered through one of the fist-sized bullet holes in the door. He activated his cell phone flashlight and swept the beam over the empty hall. The old man and the pipe were gone.
Marcus couldnât think of anything to say. He could barely form a word. When he turned to Darryl he found his friend staring at him.
âYou shouldnât be here.â
