You aren't Joey

I quickly sign off and shut down before anybody else realizes I'm snooping using Joey's name. I don't know who FelixCat is.

My stomach growls when I pass the refrigerator. I back up and open it. They have food crammed onto every shelf. I could get lost in here. I pull out a can of whipped cream and squirt in a mouthful. Joey and I both love to eat whipped cream this way. I swallow and fill my mouth again. Whipped cream leaks from my mouth. I swallow, lick my lips, and decide to eat properly, like I appreciate the food. I get two slices of bread, spread on the whipped cream, and take a bite. Crumbs fall out of my mouth. I push them back in. I try to forget that I've snuck into Joey's house and am stealing food.

I don't think. I chew slowly. The whipped cream is cool and sweet, the bread stale.

For the past eight years, Darcy, Dad, and I have spent every Thanksgiving with the Chanceys. On our first Thanksgiving, there were five kernels of corn on my plate. I leaned over and whispered to Joey, “Is this all we're having?” Dad nudged me with his elbow.

Joey said that it was a tradition in their family. He explained that the pilgrims had survived a harsh winter. As a reminder to be thankful for their blessings and the plentiful harvest, they placed a few corn kernels on their plates.

Mr. Chancey said the blessing, and then everybody had to say what they were thankful for. I was thankful to eat, because with all the tradition stuff I was near starved. Joey said he was thankful for his parents, his dog, and me.

After that, Dad started our family tradition. At Christmas, we always have noodles. Long ago he told Darcy and me that when we moved out, he wanted us to always have noodles on Christmas because we had survived on them the first year we were here.
