Erik

Erik and Ben went to the hospital together. Arjun welcomed them, and he managed a tired smile at the sandwich and coffee they brought. The bag of books they handed off made Arjun tear up.

“Thank you,” Arjun said. Day-old scruff and his haunted gaze made him barely recognizable. “It’s been a long day. The books will help pass the time. There’s not much on TV.”

“Did the doctors have anything to say?” Erik asked.

Arjun returned to his seat near Jaxon’s bed and put the food bag on the tray table. Jaxon lay too still and pale, with wires and tubes running everywhere. For someone who was always in motion and larger than life, the contrast was jarring.

“The doctors don’t know,” Arjun said. “That’s what it all boils down to. Even my cousin, the neurologist couldn’t say. Nothing fits the usual diagnoses for the symptoms, and they’re stumped.”

“Because it’s magical,” Erik replied.

Arjun looked completely wrecked, going on far too little sleep. “That appears to be the best guess, but not something the doctors will believe.”

He carded his fingers through his dark hair. “They can’t explain the sudden onset or the way his brain is active like he’s awake. But at least they can keep him alive until we find an answer and make sure he’s not in pain.”

Arjun winced at that last comment and tightened his left-handed grip on Jaxon’s hand. “I’ve explained it all to him. So if he’s awake, he knows what’s going on. I’ve begged him to hang on and fight, to stay with me. But where does that leave him? If we can’t find a cure—”

“We’re not giving up—and neither should you,” Ben said. “Erik and I are both working our contacts, and that’s a pretty big network of people who know a lot about the supernatural. We’re profiling the witch who cast the curse right now.”

Ben laid a hand on Arjun’s shoulder. “I swear to you—we’ll figure this out.”

Arjun hung his head. “Thank you,” he said in a broken voice. “That means the world to me.”

They stayed for a while, chatting about the news and odd incidents in their days. Erik told him about the latest two boxes—except for the problem figurine—while Ben made snarky comments about delays in renovating his company’s rental units.

“Is there anything we can do?” Erik asked.

Arjun raised his head and looked straight into Erik’s gaze. “Protect each other. This isn’t over.”

Erik raised an eyebrow. Arjun had never admitted to any psychic abilities. But then again, as a high-profile entrepreneur, he was more in the spotlight than anyone else—with more to lose and more reasons to keep such things hidden.

“Can we sit with Jaxon while you take a break?” Erik asked. “We’ll completely bore Jaxon telling him what we did today, but that lets you get some fresh air and a change in scenery.”

Before Arjun could object, Ben jumped in. “You’re no good to Jaxon if you burn out. You’ve got to pace yourself.”

“Word’s gotten around the arts community,” Arjun said. “Tess is
