Ballantine speeds along an access road beneath the throughway. To his left is the river, to his right old factories. Other cars pass, heading in the opposite direction. Do they see the blur too? He can’t tell. He hasn’t seen anyone pointing, anyone tapping their friend on the shoulder, Hey, what the fuck is that? But he’s driving too fast to gauge any other driver’s reaction, and he hasn’t passed many pedestrians in this part of town.

At a momentary lull in traffic, he makes a sharp left. Cuts across the lane, nearly spinning out of control. But the car’s got some serious wheels and low suspension and it handles like a dream. He makes it across and onto another side road.

He’s still on the phone with Owens, set to speaker, and he’s been narrating his journey best he can, in hopes the cop will catch up and bring the fucking cavalry.

Ballantine prides himself on his great sense of direction, but that talent eludes him now, and he realizes as he races up a hill that he’s pulled into a dead end—the road simply becomes a large, old construction site that looks like it hasn’t hosted any actual construction in years. He spins around again, but he’s cornered. Abandoned factories on three sides, potholed concrete square in the middle, like he’s in some postapocalyptic Coliseum.

Instead of lions, though, in comes the black blur.

“Shit!”

He drives around the outer perimeter, as fast as he can without losing control. Hits a deep pothole and sees a designer hubcap escaping to the rear left.

The black blur heads straight toward him. Ballantine turns hard to the right, fleeing, hoping he can draw the blur into the center of the site so that he can then race around it and get out of here, back to the main road again.

Pop, pop, pop!

The passenger window explodes. He ducks. Feels something come in contact with his jacket. Holds his breath, all his muscles clenched.
