TOMMY

He can’t do it.

The blue button is right there. His thumb is resting on it.

But he can’t make himself press it.

“Fuck,” he whispers. He hopes Patrick didn’t pick up the sound over the speakers. But judging by how busy he is inside the wardrobe, Tommy doubts he hears much of anything.

“Don’t do this, Tommy,” he says, his voice full of strain. Tommy can’t see exactly what he’s doing in there, but he seems to be working on the canister, trying to pull it open. Tommy tested the lid several times. He’s confident it won’t budge. “Please don’t press that button. You’ll kill all of us. Can you really live with that?”

No, I can’t.

The thought comes out of nowhere, making Tommy feel sick to his stomach. He didn’t expect this sudden rush of doubt. He has no idea where it’s coming from. He was convinced—absolutely convinced—that this is the right thing to do. That it’s necessary. That there’s no other way to make the folks in the house see what’s really happening around them.

Blowing off the roof, exposing them to the sky, it won’t just turn the non-immune blind, it’ll also deprive the rest of them of a safe place to hide. Gina, Patrick, even John, whom Tommy noticed on the monitor, and who arrived back here at the most perfect time—they’ll all have to face the reality out on the streets. It might not kill them, but it’ll strip away any protection and, more importantly, the delusions they’re clearly holding. They think themselves safe. In the right. Fighting the proper cause.

Tommy’s task is to show them how wrong they are. He’ll leave them no choice but to give in to their ghosts, so they can all finally stop being afraid and resisting.

He knows all this to be true.

And the only thing he needs to do in order to make it right, is to hit the damn blue button.

And yet … he can’t seem to do it.

“Never mind the fucking shoes!” Patrick suddenly screams, causing Tommy to jolt. “Get the hell out! The whole fucking house is about to blow up!”

Tommy looks at the other frames on the monitor. They’re all crammed into the entrance hall. All except Victor, who’s headed back down the hallway towards the bedroom for some reason. Gina is shouting for him, holding Anton in the other hand. John is throwing himself at the front door. It doesn’t give way. The first thing Tommy did once he came down here was to place the entire house under lockdown. Which means no doors or windows can be opened.

Apparently realizing this, John—who appears not to be able to see, since his eyes are covered with white bandages—abandons the front door and rushes back inside the hallway, pulling along Karen and Lisa.

“You need to do it, Tom-Tom.” His dad’s voice is gentle. Soft. Caring. “I know it’s not easy, but you know it needs to happen.”

Tommy glances over his shoulder to see the hospital bed. To his horror, he finds himself choking up.
