She awoke from the faint to find herself lying on the couch. Juanita crouched beside her, waving the foul smelling salts beneath her nose.
A dream, she told herself. It had been a terrible nightmare, but when she saw the tears streaking Juanitaâs face, she knew it was only too true, the horror too real. Unable to witness Juanitaâs grief, she looked away and saw Cal standing over them, his face gray, his eyes still bleak. Instinctively, she reached for him, and he came close, taking her hand in both of his. He knelt beside Juanita, and the three of them huddled together for a moment.
The words were bitter in her mouth, but she had to ask, she had to know. âWhat happened? Tell me everything.â
Unable to meet her eye, Cal looked down at her hand which he still held. âLike I said, Brad got out of the buggy to clear the road. Somebody was waiting for him. I found the place, but it had been swept clean of tracks.â His voice grew steadier as he explained, as if reducing the tragedy to a list of facts made it somehow more bearable. âHe took a shotgun blast full in the chest.â
Leah cried out in anguish, covering her mouth with her free hand to hold back the sobs because if she started crying now, she would never stop.
âHe never knew what hit him, Leah,â he assured her urgently. âHe didnât feel a thing.â
She nodded, absurdly grateful for that small mercy. âAnd Espy?â
âThe shot mustâve scared the horse or something. Anyway, it bolted, and the buggy flipped over. She... her neck was broke.â
Somehow this made it worse, knowing Espy and the tiny life she carried had been unintended victims. The darkness beckoned again, but this time Leah resisted its sweet oblivion, clinging tightly to Calâs hand as if it held her to reality.
âWho did it, Cal?â she pleaded. âWho could have done such a thing? And why?â
âNobody knows,â he told her grimly. âLike I said, the place had been swept clean, and I couldnât find any tracks. Theyâve sent for the county sheriff.â
âHeâll find whoever did this,â she said, but even she could hear the doubt in her voice. If Cal hadnât been able to find a clue, how could the sheriff?
Cal squeezed her hand and said, âSome folks are coming from town. The women said to wait until they got here. Theyâll take care of everything.â
Leah nodded, feeling the tears coming and unable to stop them. They flooded her eyes and streamed down her cheeks. Beside her Juanita sobbed softly, and Leah wondered vaguely how men could keep from crying, how they could bear the pain without the tears. Poor Cal, heâd had Brad so briefly, and now he had nothing at all.
She squeezed his hand even more tightly as the first sob shook her, and then she was in his arms, weeping against his chest, finding the comfort he always offered and giving some in return. They clung to each other
