Alexis checked her watch, growing more concerned by the minute, Amira still not having returned from the bathroom. She glanced back for the umpteenth time and breathed a sigh of relief as she finally spotted the woman making her way to her seat. She reached over and moved the lap belt out of the way.
Amira dropped into her seat and Alexis frowned, the woman pale and sweating. âWhatâs wrong?â
Amira shook her head a little too rapidly. âNothing.â
Something was definitely wrong. One didnât need CIA training to know that. She leaned over, lowering her voice. âAmira, clearly something is wrong. Please tell me what it is so I can help.â
Another rapid headshake. âPlease, leave me alone, I just want to rest.â
Alexis nodded, sitting back in her chair as Amira buckled her seatbelt and closed her eyes, her hands gripping the armrests tightly, her knuckles white. Something was wrong, of that there was no doubt. They were halfway into the flight so she doubted it was a sudden fear of flying.
She must have seen someone!
She gulped, her mouth suddenly dry as her heart began to race. She had no way of knowing if there were any terrorists onboard, and if they were easy to spot or identify before they got onboard, people like her father would have done so already.
But Amira was from the area.
She had seen them.
Met them.
And her clear terror suggested she had seen one again.
So they were all in danger.
She tried to stand, her lap belt yanking her back into her seat. She unbuckled it and rose, heading for the bathroom, eyeing the passengers, trying to spot the terrorist.
Yet it was of no use.
Easily half the plane appeared Middle Eastern to her but could be Italian for all she knew.
How can you know who to trust?
She suddenly understood why politically correct screening at airports was stupid. Why were they searching just as many little old Caucasian ladies as they were young Middle Eastern males?
She stepped into the bathroom and locked the door, pulling out her phone. She dialed her father, he immediately answering.
âHello?â
âDaddy?â She dropped onto the toilet seat, battling an overwhelming urge to begin sobbing. âI think I might be in danger.â
