He comes into the bedroom with my Stanley Cup. “Here, baby, I want you to drink more water.”

I take the cup from him and take a few more sips at his encouraging request. I know that I will be so thankful tomorrow, and after all the water and the ibuprofen I took before he got here, I should feel okay. Maybe that’s wishful thinking because I know an imminent conversation we need to have will make me feel anything but okay.

“Emma,” he says, and I sense that by the way he says my name, he wants to ask me something serious. I just wish it wasn’t in the early morning hours before dawn.

“Yes.” I look up at him and cup his cheek. I stare into his eyes and know that this will be the conversation I am not ready for, but it is necessary. If there is one person I can trust, it is him.

So I start at the beginning—with Julian. I see how his face hardens and the disgust that lingers in his features when I talk to him about the abuse I endured.

“Emma—” He halts his words, trying to remain calm. “Why the fuck didn’t you say something sooner. Why did you let him treat you that way?”

“He threatened me and, more importantly, Eduardo, he threatened my parents. He told me there would be consequences if I tried to leave home. He would ensure my parents’ careers were ruined, and we would lose our home and life as we knew it. I believed him because his dad is the mayor.” He also is into some sketchy dealings, but I leave that part out for now. After hours of talking and crying, he holds me, and for once, I fall asleep without the fear of Julian.
