Lilly scrolled through the rest of the article. It offered convoluted parallels between Peaches Geldof’s death and those of other musicians and famous personalities, suggesting that the secretive Order had arranged their murders.

‘There’s a connection,’ said Jake. ‘Sex, death and the occult.’

‘How does that link to Schultz?’

‘Maybe it doesn’t.’

‘You were sure Schultz was involved. Her voice on the phone?’

‘Maybe I was wrong.’

‘Let’s say you were. How does the occult connect to Amber’s disappearance?’

‘Maybe she didn’t get in deep with a gang in the criminal sense, but in the cult sense. Maybe she found out something she shouldn’t have. Maybe somewhere here is a clue we need.’

Lilly tapped the touch pad, exited the news article and scrolled down the contents of the folder. There were more word documents, PDFs, images.

‘Maybe it’s just research. There’s tons of material here.’

Jake raked his fingers through his hair.

‘OTO,’ he muttered. He took over from Lilly at the computer, tapped in the WiFi password, went straight to Google and entered O.T.O. Almost immediately the screen showed related sites.

‘For a secret society they aren’t very secret,’ he said. ‘Want to see what the United Kingdom Grand Lodge of the Order has to offer?’ He clicked the link. The website appeared.

For a cult notorious for sex rituals the site didn’t show so much as a nipple. It had gothic script, a few images of hexagrams and links to extracts from a text called “Liber Al”. Jake clicked on Liber Al and skimmed a few paragraphs. It read like the Bible grafted onto random nursery rhymes and made about as much sense.

‘No postal address. That’s about as mysterious as it gets. We are invited to email the UK Querant Secretary if we wish.’ The site struck him as a bit weird, but not sinister. More like grown-up games and role-play. ‘What are the chances he’d tell me anything about Amber Monroe?’

‘Nil. We don’t know there’s any connection between them. There’s a stamp in a book she owned. If I have a book with the Prime Minister’s stamp in it, does that mean I’ve ever met him or I’m member of his party?’

‘How about we ask him for a complete list of practicing members?’

‘Slim chance. Why do you want a list?’

‘To see of Amber is a member.’

The OTO site had news about an International Election, in which the Grand Council of the Order elected Frater Hymenaeus Beta to the post of Outer Head of the Order and Sovereign Patriarch of Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica and Caliph. It sounded less mysterious than pompous and archaic.

‘I’m guessing Frater Beta doesn’t exist on iDetect. Pretty sure he doesn’t have a passport or own a house under that name either,’ said Jake.

‘Why don’t you have a look?’

‘It’s Zach’s machine. No iDetect.’

‘If you really want to, can Zach hack the Order’s email or something? Find a list of members?’

‘Possible – but he’s a bit freaked out right now. Getting Tasered tends to do that.’

‘Tasered?’ Lilly reined in her shock as the waitress appeared with their food.

‘Relax,’ said Jake.
