Chapter 30

It was gone eight by the time Sam left her room. She’d hummed and hawed about what to wear, eventually deciding on the outfit she had earmarked for the office on Thursday, a navy silk blouse and cream skirt, more business casual than date night but it would have to do.

Chris was waiting in the lobby when she got there and she could immediately see that he’d made an effort. He looked good too in a white linen shirt over black denims.

“You look great,” he said as he bent to peck her on the cheek.

“Thanks.”

“Are you okay with steak?”

“I love steak.”

“Great. I’ve booked us a table at Gourdans. It’s only a ten-minute walk.”

They set off for the restaurant and he asked her about her family. From there the conversation flowed easily and they found they had a lot in common, not just karate but also their taste in books and films.

Once they had ordered their mains, a sirloin for her and a t-bone for him, Sam decided to ask about the notebook.

“Do you know Kevin?” she asked.

“Short guy, sits in the cubicle next to yours?”

“That’s the one.” She hesitated. “Sorry to ask you this Chris, but he told me you were at my desk last week looking through my notebook. Is that true?”

“Sorry, Sam.”

“You were?”

“I… Well, the truth is…” He looked her in the eyes and gave a half-smile. “I was looking to see if there was anything in it to indicate you had a boyfriend.”

“Really?” She didn’t know whether to be relieved or more suspicious.

“Stupid, I know,” he said, looking thoroughly embarrassed now. “Rude too. I’m really sorry Sam, I was bang out of order.”

It was an excuse, albeit a lame one. Sam decided to forget about it for the time being and come back to it if necessary. For now, she was going to concentrate on enjoying the evening.

“Don’t worry,” she said and smiled. “So, is Eddie Murphy genuinely your favourite actor?”

“Has been ever since I was eight and my Dad took me to the cinema to see a film he was in. I laughed so much I nearly wet myself.”

“Dr Dolittle?”

“No. I’ll give you a clue.” He coughed then said, adopting his best Eddie Murphy accent, “You might have seen a housefly, maybe even a superfly, but I bet you ain’t never seen a donkey fly.”

Sam laughed. “Shrek!”

“Exactly. Wasn’t it marvellous?”

“Fantastic. My Mum and Dad took me to see it when it came out as well.”

“Hey,” he said. “They’re doing a one-night-only screening of ‘The Nutty Professor’ on Wednesday night at the Curzon. I was thinking of going on my own but we could make it a second date if you’re up for it. Perhaps go to a bar first?”

Sam was a little taken aback. This was moving very quickly. “Well, I don’t know if…”

Chris held his hand up. “Sorry, I’m being too forward. Forget I asked.”

She smiled. “No, let’s do it, although I have an admission to make.”

“And what’s that?”

“I’ve never seen it.”

Chris smacked his palm on the table.
