CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

The Tipsy Goat, Roya Lane, London, United Kingdom

Mama Jamba was right that Lee, the assassin baker, got extra feisty when made to wait. Because of stopping to read and dissect the note, Rose was later to meet Lee than she intended. When Rose tried to explain why they were running late, Lee held up her hand.

“Just pay my check when it comes,” Lee said at once, polishing off a plate of buffalo wings.

“Oh, can I get those chick’n style?” Elvis asked, peering in close to her food when they joined her at the table. “You know, chicken-like without the bird.”

“A vegetarian dragon,” Lee said, sucking to clear a piece of meat from between her teeth. “You’re probably the strangest Beaufont I’ve had the fortune of meeting.”

He nodded, proudly bowing in the air. “Thank you very much.”

Rose sat down, watching as Lee quickly went to work, finishing off her buffalo wings and beer. “Okay, so have you figured out who is following me? I think they planted another note on me just now.”

Lee’s gaze darted to the door to the pub and grill. She shook her head, biting into a buffalo wing, clearing the meat from the bone in one swift movement. “Nah, and I’m off the case. You can keep your money.” She reached into her pocket and pulled a wad of cash from it and dumped it on the table.

“Wait, you did get the five hundred dollars?” Rose asked, looking between the money and Elvis.

His mustache drooped, and his eyes widened. “Wow, your life is so weird, Rose.”

Lee nervously glared between the pair. “What’s going on? I mean beside you being stalked by someone outside my paygrade or stalking skills, which is saying a lot.”

“I can’t get rid of money lately,” Rose explained. “I paid you and got the cash back. I was mugged and got even more money back. I donated a million dollars and got three back immediately.”

“Yeah, I’m going to need you to get real problems and not fairytale ones,” Lee said, downing her beer.

Elvis snapped in the direction of the waiter. “I’ve got real problems. I’m Starving Marvin. And the worst part is that my name is Marvin until I fix this starving problem.”

Lee pointed to Elvis with her pinky, a buffalo wing bone in her hand. “Did he drink bleach?”

Rose shook her head, then nodded. “It’s entirely possible. Hard to tell what things he did to kill all the brain cells Mama Jamba gave him in the beginning.”

“So your problem, pretty girl,” Lee began, tossing the empty bone on the table and wiping her hands and mouth, “is that you can’t get rid of money and keep getting more just by giving it away? Is that really what I’m hearing?”

Rose nodded. “It’s not right. And someone keeps leaving me notes that offer clues to my current case.”

Lee peeled back, mock horror on her face. “My gods! What kind of monster is after you? They give you money secretly and help you with your job? You poor soul.
