By default, SPSS calculates asymptotic significance but you can command it to calculate Exact or Monte Carlo in all Crosstabs and Nonparametric analysis by clicking an exact button (Fig. 7.4).

4.1. The assumptions for McNemar's test

• Participants should be paired or matched/related.

• Both variable should be nominal and dichotomous (2 × 2).

• Participants should be independent of each other.

• Mutually exclusive groups.

The McNemar's test has one more condition, namely a sufficient samples of discordant pairs (>30). Remember, it is not the sample size but the number of discordant pairs. However, if this fails, we can safely use exact significance that is automatically reported by SPSS when applying the McNemar's test.
