CHAPTER 8

Proof

“I really want to believe you,” Lieutenant Swimmer said as he put Billy in the back seat of his police car. “But your story is pretty wild. You can’t go around slandering an upright member of the community that way.”

“There has to be some way I can prove it to you,” Billy said from the back seat as they headed for the police station. “I am completely innocent, and I believe Mr. Ravenwood is completely guilty. He’s probably going to hurt another girl in the very near future.”

“And you say you saw this when he touched you?” the lieutenant asked. “Does this supposedly happen whenever you touch someone?”

“Only if that person has been involved in a situation where someone is hurt or in danger,” Billy answered. “Or if they’re about to be involved in a negative event. At least that seems to be the way it works. I’m still trying to figure it out.”

They arrived at the police station and the lieutenant escorted Billy inside. Surprisingly, Little Wolf was lurking in a corner of the waiting room. One of the other officers there, Sergeant Bowers, showed Billy to the conference room.

“Your father is on his way,” Sergeant Bowers told Billy. “He’ll be present when we talk to you.”

As the officer left to get Billy a soda, the little Indian managed to scurry into the room before the door closed.

“What are you doing here?” Billy asked in a whisper.

“Wesley sent me to find you to see if you were all right,” Little Wolf said. “He had a vibe that there might be something wrong.”

Little Wolf quickly put a finger to his lips to signal Billy to keep quiet. In a few minutes Sergeant Bowers returned with a canned soda and Billy’s father.

“Is Billy under arrest?” Mr. Buckhorn asked the officer.

“No,” Bowers replied. “We’re just trying get a handle on what’s really going on. Can I get you anything, Mr. Buckhorn?”

“No, just please move this along as quickly as possible,” he replied.

Bowers handed Billy the soda, and both of their hands touched the can briefly. A black-and-white movie began to run in Billy’s head. In it the officer was squatted down beside his police car. Someone from inside a nearby old house was shooting at him. When the firing paused, Bowers stood and fired off three quick shots. A scream of pain came from inside the house and the shooting stopped. The movie ended.

“Were you just involved in a shootout?” Billy asked the officer. “With someone inside an old house?”

“Yes, I was,” the policeman said. “How did you know that?”

“Yeah, how did you know that?” Billy’s dad echoed the question.

“I tried telling you the other day, Dad,” Billy answered with frustration. “But you were too fixated on some guy in some historical archive.”

Billy turned to Bowers and said, “I just saw an image of it when you handed me the soda can.”

“Hold on,” Bowers said. “Let me call the lieutenant. He’ll want to hear this straight from you.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t pay more attention,” Billy’s father said when they were alone.
