Chapter fourteen

Olivia

I stare at the dark red jumpsuit in my hands. It’s the best I can do on such short notice. “I think I’ll go with this.”

The sound of Carter’s car pulling up to the house forces me to get dressed quickly. When the billionaire comes into the house, I’m already dressed. I intercept him in the living room.

Carter pauses when he sees me. The corners of his lips form a soft smile as his eyes move over my body. “You look so good,” he says.

I look down at the outfit. “Is this too much?” I ask. “When you called about a casual outing, I wasn’t sure what to pick.”

“It’s perfect, Olivia,” he replies. Carter is wearing dark pants and a light sweatshirt. The maroon color blends well with my clothes. “This is sort of what I pictured you in for today.”

“Where are we going?”

“I didn’t tell you on the phone, I’m not telling you now.” His voice is calm and sweet. There’s a hint of teasing in it that makes me even more curious.

Carter offers a hand to me. “Shall we?”

I take his hand, letting him lead me outside to the waiting car. He opens the door and laughs when I shoot him an odd look.

“This’ll all make sense soon,” he promises.

I get into the passenger’s side and fiddle with the seatbelt while he enters his side.

“You could just tell me where you’re taking me,” I chip in. “This is because of—”

“This isn’t even because of anything,” he says, turning the key in the ignition. The vehicle roars to life, and Carter looks back to reverse out of the driveway.

The rest of his answer comes when we get into the street. “Olivia, it’s been a tough couple of weeks for both of us. I figured we could both take the day off from work and just spend some time together.”

The words ring in my head. He wants to spend time together?

I let out a relieved sigh. “Why didn’t you just say that?”

“Because I figured you wouldn’t want to leave work like that. Was I wrong?”

I open my mouth to counter but pause. “No, I probably wouldn’t have. You still haven’t told me where we’re heading.”

Carter flashes another smile without looking at me. “That’s still a surprise. Don’t worry, it’s nothing stressful. The point is to relax and enjoy ourselves, right?”

“Okay… I’ll trust you on this one.”

Our drive doesn’t take too long, and besides two songs that I’m surprised Carter doesn’t know, nothing happens until we reach our destination.

“The park?” I ask, looking at the sign that gives me an answer.

“Yes,” he replies, turning the wheel. “What’s a better place to sit and relax?”

Carter maneuvers the car into a parking spot and again opens the door for me.

He offers a hand, making me frown. “I can get out of the car, you know.”

“I know,” he replies. “I’m only doing this because I want to hold your hand.”

“Oh…” I look down and take his hand, hoping his gaze isn’t on my reddening face.
