ZACH

Steel Coeus was a tall, grey building with long windows that gleamed in the sun. At the very top, with expansive large windows surrounding its entirety, was the office of the company’s esteemed CEO. It was nearly the size of an apartment, with windows that reached the tall ceiling where luxurious crystal chandeliers hung. The extravagant office was full of midcentury couches and tables, and a fully stocked bar with wine glasses and bottles. Large rugs covered the cold marble floor and modern art made from old, retired technology was mounted on the walls.

I had barely emerged from my office in months. Blueprints for retail stores of my company were in motion, all waiting for my hopeful approval. There were drawings and paperwork scattered all over my desk, two mugs with dried out coffee, and empty take out plates. I sighed tiredly, walking around the office picking up pieces of paper and trash. The large windows were showing the disappearance of the sun, but I was still hard at work.

Stepping over to the bar, I caught a glimpse of my reflection. I was a moderately tall man with tanned skin and sun-kissed blonde hair that showed the signs of my hands constantly running through it. My striking blue eyes and thick, dark eyelashes were transfixed as I hurried to fix my golden hair as if someone was going to come to my office, even past business hours. My suit was surprisingly sharp, not a wrinkle in sight, for having worn it for so long. I usually tried to be energetic and welcoming, but I’d been crammed into my office for so long that I had slight bags under my eyes. I always had my lips pursed and my eyebrows furrowed as if my mind was abuzz with all the dealings of my multi-billion dollar company.

Some might even say that I ran it all by myself. I worked enough to make it seem that way.

But all the work I did never seemed like it was enough. All the long, restless nights slaving away at my desk, squinting in the light of a lone desk lamp, never made the days go any smoother. I was needed by everyone and was expected to handle everything. I was so involved in my company that I didn’t have time to do anything else. I barely managed to eat and sleep let alone meet new people.

I had stayed overnight again to prepare for an investor meeting, answer emails, and finish editing paperwork for it. When I looked up at the clock, the rest of the building office was in darkness. I spared a glance at the expensive watch on my wrist for the first time in hours, and I realized it was later than I’d planned on. Much later. Again.

I sighed, running my hands over my face, the stubble of my cheeks prickling my fingertips. The ceiling lights were buzzing in a low hum, starting to flicker on throughout the building.

The days were blurring together. I barely knew the day of week.
