Chapter Thirteen

Monday, February 1st.

Marriott Hotel. Caracas. Venezuela.

I was sitting on the side of the bed thinking about lighting up a smoke when Kamps called. “I wake you up?”

“Nope. I’m up.”

“Did Paulo have anything for you?”

“Possibly. Waiting to hear a time when I’ll be meeting with a guard from the palace. Need it to be this morning. Don’t want to waste the whole fuckin’ day sitting on my ass.”

“Yeah, a guard on the inside might be the way to go. Hope he can help you, Tommy.”

“I told Lee about the guard, so he’s waiting for that meeting to happen. He’s a bit of a mess.”

“I talked to him last night and he’s holding on.”

“Good. This fuckin’ mess is gonna backwash so fuckin’ bad on him when it splatters everywhere. It’s gonna be goddamned gross.”

“I can picture it,” said Kamps, “and I think he knows it. A White House nightmare. Be hard to keep it under wraps.”

“You talk to Vonnie?”

“She called looking for you. Like I said, she’s got the hots for you.”

“Don’t think so.” I laughed. “We’re friends. That’s it. Only friends.”

“Better tell her that.” Kamps chuckled. “Before she moves to Texas and plans your wedding.”

“Fuck that.”

Private Residence. White House. D.C.

Lee showered, dressed, and figured his heart rate had never been so high. He had a strong urge to call Annie but couldn’t do that. No way she could be involved in this fiasco.

June brought his breakfast into the dining room on a tray. He smiled and thanked her but couldn’t eat much. The sick feeling in the pit of his stomach wouldn’t let up.

After his talk with Kamps—a man who dealt in facts and knew what was actually happening in the dark streets—Lee forced himself to face the truth. Jimmy Sutherland might be dead when they finally found him. He had to be prepared for that and what it would mean to the political world of Washington, D.C.

He jumped when his cell rang, and it was a call he wasn’t anxious to take. “Ambassador Ortez, good morning.”

“I hate to bother you, Mister President, but have you made any progress finding the vice president?”

“Progress has been made and I’ll know more by the end of the day. Keep the vigil, sir, and I’ll notify you as soon as I have positive news.”

“Wonderful. Thank you, sir.”

Lee exhaled deeply and swallowed two Advil with his orange juice.

Another call and this one he definitely didn’t want to answer. “Brenda, I have news.”

“Fantastic. You found Jimmy?”

“I know where he is, but I can’t share that with you until the extraction is complete. Please, please realize this will take all day and try to remain calm.”

“I’m thinking of flying down to Venezuela, Lee. I want to be there when they find Jimmy.”

“That’s the last place you want to be, Brenda. Wait until I call you and then we’ll arrange to get him back home.”

“Why will it take all day?”

“It’s a delicate situation.”

“Explain it to me.”

“I can’t.”

“I have a right to know where my husband is and why he’s not answering my calls.
