TWENTY-EIGHT

Big Horn, Wyoming

Jennifer’s mind was racing as fast as her heartbeat as she skidded to a stop at the Big Horn Lodge. Even the ticket a friendly Deputy Travis had given her in the thirty-mile per hour zone in Big Horn hadn’t slowed the churn inside her.

She threw the door to the rental car open, glad she was wearing jeans and casual cruiser shoes. Breaking into a run, she took the porch steps two at a time.

“Wait,” Kid called.

She didn’t wait. Nor did she knock. She barreled into the living room. “George? Are you in here?”

She paused, listening for a response. She heard loud mechanical noises from behind the lodge. Tractor-like noises. And a chittering.

“Jeremiah!” she called.

The fluffy little animal stretched and rolled on the sofa like a cat waking from a nap. She picked him up and held him to her face, crooning baby nonsense.

Kid caught up with her. “It’s the little stink pot.”

“Shh. Don’t listen to him,” Jennifer said into Jeremiah’s fur.

“You should get one of your own.”

His words pole axed her heart. She didn’t want one of her own. She wanted Jeremiah. But an ugly truth hit her. He belonged to George, in Wyoming, no matter what George had said about pets coming with the purchase of the lodge. She could research her condo building’s rules and talk to the property manager all she wanted to, but it wouldn’t matter. She knew this skunk would never be coming to Texas. Feeling like she was amputating a limb, she forced herself to set Jeremiah back on the couch.

“What’s the matter?” Kid sounded confused.

How can he know, at his tender age, the pain of true love? “We’ve got to find George.” She raised her voice. “George? Are you in here?”

When there was again no response, she trotted toward the back porch with Kid right behind her. Once on the deck, she followed the noise of the tractor to the septic pit. A huge blue plastic tank was perched in the tractor bucket over the hole. George was gesticulating wildly to Black Bear Betty, Liam standing beside him swaying in the wind. George’s gestures might mean Black Bear Betty should move the tank slightly to her left. It was hard to be sure, because he abruptly started making the same motions in the opposite direction before she had adjusted the tractor.

The whole scene was bizarre. The last time Jennifer had seen that hole, it had contained Hadley’s dead body and an injured Liam. She leaned on her knees, suddenly lightheaded from altitude, exertion, and sheer excitement.

Kid shouted to be heard. “Do you really think George and Hadley are twins?”

She shot him a look. Sometimes he was such a, well, kid. “We don’t have any new information since we left Pootie’s office. All we can do is ask George about it. And it’s entirely possible the sample just got contaminated or switched out or something.”

“But if they really are twins . . .”

He was only echoing her own thoughts and emotions. She needed to rein both of them in.
