CRAIG

It was time to redeem myself. Kali had surprised the fuck out of me during that first round but she was also right, I hadn’t been coming at her with everything I had.

Now that I knew how she felt about it when men did that, I was determined not to be another jerk who underestimated her just because she had a vagina. On the other hand, though, I also really didn’t want to hurt her.

Those two sides of me warred against one another as Kali and I danced around the mat. With Lane, it was easier to let go, but even then, I almost always held back at least a little. What she was asking me to do was to show her everything I had, and I honestly didn’t know if I could do that with someone I… What? Care about?

Mentally scoffing at the thought, I narrowed my eyes. I didn’t care about her. I liked her and I respected her, but I didn’t care about her. Besides, she was literally demanding that I prove to her that I could protect myself, and if I couldn’t, there was a chance I could find myself with more guards following me around.

While I knew she’d been joking about it just now, I also knew that a part of her had been serious. If she thought I needed extra protection, she’d tell her boss and Jason about it, and I’d suddenly find myself with more of her to contend with. I didn’t mind having her around anymore, but Colonel Mustard and I weren’t going to work out.

Keeping that thought front and center in my mind, I stepped back when she lunged at me. “This might be easier if I pretend you’re one of the bad guys.”

“That’s not really out of character for you,” she teased. “You spent weeks doing it after we met. I’m sure you could go back to that place in your head pretty easily if you tried.”

“Maybe, but I still never wanted to hit you.”

She scrunched up her nose before laughing. “Maybe not, but that’s only because you wanted to fuck me. If I was a guy, you’d have wanted to hit me.”

“True,” I admitted but then fell silent as I dug deep to find that place she’d told me to go to.

Despite my best intentions, Kali still managed to land the first hit—again. It jarred me out of my head, though.

Okay, baby. If that’s what you want, let me show you something. It took every ounce of concentration I had, but I finally managed to focus enough on taking her down that my body and my training took over.

Once I let that happen, we really got going. Kali was light on her feet and probably the only other person I’d ever gone up against who was faster than me. She was also intently focused, seemingly able to drown out everything around her as she circled me before coming at me again and again.
