Chapter 16

Eve

I wake before Allie. My head still rests on her chest. The steady rise and fall from her breathing soothes me. My body is stiff, and my back still aches, but the pain is nowhere near what it was last night. I tilt my head up enough to see her sleeping face. I try not to move too much to keep from waking her. I want to watch her sleep.

She looks so peaceful when she sleeps. Her hair hangs loosely around her face from the rain last night, and I want nothing more than to brush it to the side so I can see more of her beautiful face. I reach up and move it gently with my fingers. Allie stirs. I knew she would. She’s like her mother in that matter, a light sleeper.

She smiles at my touch.

“Good morning, Allie,” I say.

“Good morning. How are you feeling?”

“Better than last night. But you know what would make it even better?”

“What’s that?” She giggles.

“A kiss from you.” I bite my bottom lip in anticipation.

“Oh, yeah?”

She moves her hand over my cheek and leans down for a kiss. Her soft, delicate lips meet mine. I yearn for more, but she pulls away.

“Better?” She teases.

“Slightly. I could use some more attention.”

“Not until I know you are okay, and you tell me what the hell happened to you last night.” Her voice is firm, and I know she means business.

“You wouldn’t believe the truth even if I gave it to you.” I sigh.

She’s either going to hate me and think I’m psychotic or she’ll try to understand.

“Try me, beautiful.”

“Are you sure? It’s going to get weird,” I say.

“Eve.”

“Alright. I’m a guardian angel. Your guardian angel.” I pause, waiting for her to say something, but she just looks at me, waiting for me to go on. “I… I broke the rules, and this is my punishment. I lost my wings.” It’s only part of the truth, but I have to start somewhere.

A tear trails down my face and Allie wipes it away with her fingers.

“I don’t understand. What could you have done that was so bad that you’d lose your wings?”

“I was supposed to stay hidden and away from you.”

“So, you lost them because of me?”

“No, Allie.” I grab ahold of her hand. “This isn’t your fault. Don’t even let yourself think that.”

“But, you saved me last night.”

“Wait, you remember that?” My heart leaps within my chest. She remembers my wings.

“You held me in your arms and whispered my name.” She pauses. “I ran out of the house and into the street to try to get away from my parents yelling and to find you. I didn’t see the truck and… Eve, your wings! They… they’re beautiful!”

I watch her eyes light up, remembering my wings surrounding both of us.

“Were,” I say.

She looks at me like I’m a wounded creature. I am, but I don’t want her to see me that way.

“None of this is going to be easy for you to understand,” I say.

“Were you punished because you love me?”

Her question weighs heavily on my heart.
