Chapter Seventeen

By the time Pete pulled up in front of her cottage in the early afternoon, Lisa was fighting physical exhaustion held at bay with too much caffeine. After she’d met with Byte, she’d also updated her captain, and then, search warrant in hand, she, Sanchez, and Josh had gone over Gran’s house with a fine-toothed comb. Afterward, they sat down and went over every fact, clue, or guess they had, and it still added up to almost nothing. She’d followed that with a few hours of patrolling Chapel Lake, just in case. Now her nerves were buzzing and she simultaneously wanted to do nothing but sleep.

But a little shot of adrenaline hit her system when Pete showed up. Dressed in a tee shirt and jeans, gun tucked in his waistband, he looked good enough to eat. Memories of their fiery kiss sent a little shiver down her back, and she couldn’t help admiring the way the denim cupped his backside when he reached into his truck. He caught her looking and winked.

“We’ll take my truck,” he said, and tucked her shovel into the back seat along with his own supplies. Her official vehicle would draw too much attention, as would seeing his sedan out on the dirt roads.

His scent filled the cab of his vehicle, sending more memories of last night washing over her, but she ignored them as she climbed in. When she reached for the coffee mug she’d brought along, he said, “No offense, Fish, but you look like a druggie coming off a high. Might want to skip the coffee.”

She eyed his rumpled hair and tired eyes, raised a brow. “You are such a romantic, Bulldog.” But she couldn’t help grinning as she said it.

His smile kicked up at the corners, but then he sobered. “Don’t expect me to apologize for last night.”

The words sent a fluttery shiver all the way to her toes. She cleared her throat, looked out the window. “Not asking you to. But we need to keep things professional.”

There was a pause, then he nodded. “You’re right. For now. You make any progress this morning?”

“Josh, Sanchez, and I went over Gran’s place again and I found one interesting thing. Those two payments Shelley made to Redd for the property? My gran gave her the money.”

“Now that’s interesting. Didn’t realize they were that close.”

Lisa ignored the jab of hurt that Gran had readily helped Shelley but barely spared Lisa the time of day. “Afterward, I spent more time searching Chapel Lake, but didn’t find anything new.” She paused. “But I am making someone nervous. I got a rock through my dining room window last night.”

Pete shot her a glance, hands tightening on the wheel as they turned down the sandy driveway to Calvin’s home. “Any luck finding out who did it?”

“Nope. I checked my trail cameras and the whole area and got nothing.”

“Whoever it was knows where they are and avoided them.”

“That’s my take, too.”

“But why throw a rock? Seems childish.”

“The rock had my picture wrapped around it, rubber bands securing it.
