Setting a Theme

What I like about choosing a theme is that it helps you focus your ideas for your party. If you know your theme is, say, 1950s sock hop, then you can make your playlist (lots of tunes from Grease); decide on the decor (old 45 records, photos of Elvis and James Dean); finalize your menu (ice-cream sodas, mini burgers); and suggest costumes for guests (poodle skirts, saddle shoes, leather jackets). See how it all comes together? Think about a hobby, a place, or a decade that you love. Here are a few fun ones:

Hawaiian luau. Break out the leis, the limbo stick, and the ukulele! Serve up tropical smoothies (see recipe) with tiny umbrellas and chicken-pineapple skewers! Don’t you just “lava” this idea?
