Jerry pulled me off to the side around eleven thirty. Not one to waste time, he got straight to the point. “Jan called. She’s got whatever bug you had. She’s not coming in tonight. Can you stay?”

“You want me to pull a double?”

“That’s what I just said, isn’t it?”

“Jeez, no need to get cranky.”

“I get nothing but grief from you girls…”

“I’m just kidding, Jerry. I’ll stay, okay?”

He turned and stalked off, mumbling something about selling the diner and moving to a cabin in the woods.
