Application to Practice and Research

In the past 20 years the use of the Neuman systems model to guide practice and research has grown exponentially. In the beginning the model was primarily used in academia, fulfilling Neuman’s original idea that the model should be used as a teaching aid (Neuman, 1989). Initially the model was used as a teaching method. Subsequently the model was used to organize the entire nursing curricula. The nursing program at Neumann College in Aston, Pennsylvania, was the first college to do so, in the early 1970s. Since that time numerous colleges and universities around the nation and the world have based both baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs on the model.

With students becoming cognizant and comfortable with the model during their educational experience, the next logical step was an increase in the application of the model in practice and research. In both editions of Neuman’s book (1982, 1989), the vast majority of the material presented focuses on the application of the model in practice and research. Examples of application are not limited to these two volumes. A listing of material found in the literature that utilizes the Neuman systems model is included in the bibliography. Several of the sources included in the bibliography are discussed here in further detail as examples of how the Neuman model has been utilized in practice and research.
