Chapter Nine

Jake stood in the middle of the football field with a whistle in one hand and a football in the other. It didn’t feel much like work. He had gotten to know the boys in a very personal way in such a short time. He was enjoying his new job very much. Another perk was that he was able to see Sela, even if it was from a distance. He had seen her headlights come up the drive very late last night, and he figured she had been with Matt. He knew she would have to continue the relationship as she always had, but it didn’t make him feel any better. He thought about her soft plump lips and how he had felt kissing her in Atlanta. He wanted her more than he had ever wanted anyone in his life. She made him feel so alive. Sela watched him from the kitchen window. He couldn’t see her from where he was working.

She buzzed for a housekeeper.

“Hey, Shannon.”

“Hello, Ms. Barnes. What can I do for you?”

Sela rarely buzzed for anyone, but she needed a letter delivered and she couldn’t do it herself.

“I need you to take this envelope to Mr. Caraway. He’s our newest employee.” Shannon looked out the window.

“I know who our newest employee is. Do you think I’m blind and deaf? Everybody is talkin’ about Mr. Jake. With pleasure, Ms. Barnes.” Her mouth was wet with saliva at the sight of Jake standing half-naked in the distance. His ball cap shadowed his face, but at this point, the face didn’t matter. Shannon jumped into her golf cart and drove calmly towards the figure. Jake saw her coming. He pushed his hat back to get a better look at the approaching girl.

“Ms. Barnes told me to give this to you.”

“Well, thanks. Everybody, take a water break.” His smile made her panic. She turned quickly and left, feeling disappointed that she had not at least asked him how he was liking his new job or something!

He laid the football on the ground and opened the letter.

Jake,

It has been three days and counting since I have seen you (up close, that is). I watch you from my window sometimes. If you are free tonight, maybe we can spend it together. If that’s okay, just raise your head and nod yes right now. (I’m watching you from the kitchen.)

Jake laughed out loud. He raised his head and smiled. She waved from the back door. He continued to read.

I’ll see you at 7:00, if I can wait that long.

Sela

Jake folded the letter and put it in his pocket. He was on cloud nine.

There were seven long hours left in the day before she would meet Jake. She phoned a longtime friend of hers and asked her to go shopping. She wanted to wear something very special for her first evening on the ranch with Jake.

Sela pulled up and honked. She had known Julie all her life. They had gone to church together since they were kids.
