TWENTY-ONE

VIOLET

With Colson’s hand in mine, we keep our heads down and dart for the rear exit of the club. I remember using it once freshman year when Everleigh was being creeped on by some guy at the bar and we needed a more discreet getaway than going out the front.

“I hope you know where you’re going,” he says in my ear, his breath too warm for my liking after what just happened in that stupid little hallway by the bathrooms. It only makes me want to clench my thighs together in need with each step, and right now, my head needs to focus on getting us the hell out of here.

I wasn’t thinking straight when I dragged him behind that wall and convinced him the only option he had was to make out with me so security didn’t recognize him. I also didn’t expect he’d taste so good. I had no clue his tongue on mine would make me feral for more, which puts me in quite the predicament. I try to push the underlying desire away as I curve down a hall in the back of the club and find the glow of the exit sign above a door at the end of it.

“Text Sebastian,” I tell him. “Let him know we’re out back, and he’ll know where to find us.”

“I saw him go for the entrance. I think he left.”

I push the door open, sighing in relief when it doesn’t signal an alarm. The night’s cool air hits me, and it’s more refreshing than the time I drank water out of Fletcher’s bathroom faucet.

“He didn’t leave.” I’m sure of it. “Before I dragged you away, I told him to cover for us. He said he was going to slow down security long enough for me to think up a plan.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes.” I twist around and watch as he runs his hands through his hair. A mix of concern and elation, looks past me at our surroundings. Out here, the alley is narrow, but there’s enough space for a car to fit down it with dumpsters off to the side. It definitely lacks the appeal of Lucy’s entrance, but I was too nervous security would pluck Colson from my grasp if we went that route.

“Fuck.” It comes out hushed as he hurriedly sends a message to his cousin before pushing his phone back into his pocket.

“Relax.”

From two yards away, his gaze shifts to me. His adrenaline is probably finally starting to crash, and the last thing he wants is to be told to chill. Add in the fact that we were just lip locked not five minutes ago, and I’d be willing to bet I’m right. He looks like he’s about to say something when the back door flings open, his cousin’s eyes bouncing between us before Tristan, Webber, and Sylvia follow him out.

Sebastian is the first to speak. “Got your text, but I spotted you two before you came out this way. What the fuck happened in there?”

My gaze
