Two weeks later Phil arrived early the day before gun-deer season opening. Once again he’d driven all night. That concerned Nick, but Phil was an adult. What could he say? Now on a forested part of Nick’s acreage far from any houses, they were tracking a deer. A light snow early in the morning gave them perfect conditions for tracking. They spotted the deer, a doe. They had to let it go. They could only take a buck. They continued forward, as silently as possible.

“Man,” Phil said a long time later, “I hope we get a buck this year. It won’t be the same up here after my big deal gets going.”

Nick paused. This wasn’t the first time Phil had mentioned this big deal he was working on. But he always sounded like Nick knew the details. Should he ask? And what did the big deal have to do with their hunting? Would Phil be too busy with everything next November? Nick felt a vague misgiving. But the sight of new tracks in the snow grabbed his attention.
