Chapter Ten

Okay. That was all the text from Colby said. Hunter glared at his phone and tried to decide what, exactly, that okay meant. After all, he’d sent a longer message, twenty-five words longer in fact. Hunter had resent it three times since yesterday, and he’d only just gotten a reply.

I’m sorry but I got called into work. I won’t be able to call you until I’m off shift or on one of your days off.

“So what the fuck does okay mean?” Hunter stared at his phone some more. It was after ten at night—he could probably find a private place and call Colby now.

“What’s got you looking so pissed?”

Hunter groaned. “God, Brad, go away already.”

Brad punched him on the arm. “Stop being such a dick. You sure don’t want anything to do with me now.” He eyed Hunter speculatively. “Bet you never did. Think you’re too good to hang out with this ex-con cousin, huh? You just puttin’ up with me to keep my bitch of a mother happy?”

“Shut up before I shut you up,” Hunter growled. “You don’t talk about Aunt Theresa that way.”

Brad was already swinging his fist.

Hunter ducked and his phone slipped out of his hand. He shoved Brad and sent him stumbling.

“What the hell is going on out here?” someone shouted.

“Nothing, just got carried away horsing around,” Hunter said, trying to control his temper before he got fired.

“Yeah, we were just goofing off, and he got touchy over me asking about his girlfriend,” Brad mock-whispered. “She’s a big gal, but he likes ’em like that.”

“I don’t give a fuck how he likes ’em,” snarled Sheldon, their immediate boss. “You two disturb my sleep again and I will stomp the shit out of y’all!”

“Sorry,” Hunter said. “Won’t happen again.”

After Sheldon and everyone else went in, Hunter found his phone. He was glad it hadn’t broken. The ninety bucks he’d spent on a protective case for it had proven to be worth every dime.

With Brad seeking him out like he’d just done, Hunter didn’t feel comfortable calling Colby. He’d have to settle for a text. Surely Colby would be up by now. If he got off from Rio’s at noon, and puttered around then slept eight hours, he had to up. If not, he’d be awake soon.
