Chapter Fourteen

“Molly is here. I found her a hotel room, and I…decided to stay with her.”

She called Sean while Molly was in the bathroom. Caitlyn’s face was burning, as if her intentions were anything but honorable. She didn’t want to leave Molly alone. She didn’t feel like going back to the house either, not yet.

It was all too complicated being with this kind family, under the circumstances.

“Should I come get you?”

“No. No, I don’t think that’s a good idea. I’ll make sure she gets on that plane safely, and then I’ll come back to get my things.”

“Sure. Okay. Thanks, Caitlyn. I’ll see you tomorrow then.”

“Yeah…One more thing—do you think I could take a couple of days? I know it’s not the best timing, but…”

“Of course. This trip was a big ask, and we got a head start.”

“Thank you. See you tomorrow.”

Next, Caitlyn called her sister. She didn’t need to worry about the time of day. Vicky was a carpenter by trade, and an artist. She often worked nights on her sculptures.

“Caitlyn, hey. Are you okay?”

“I hope I didn’t wake you?”

“Of course you didn’t, but this is unusual. What’s up?”

Caitlyn cast a glance at the still closed bathroom door. “I wasn’t sure I’d have the time, but I’m less than two hours away, and I was wondering if I could stay with you a couple of days.”

“No problem. Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yes, I’m fine. Don’t worry. I am on a work trip, but I’ll be able to take some time off, and I thought it would be nice to see you. Also…could you come get me tomorrow?”

“You keep telling me not to worry, but all of this does sound strange,” Vicky commented. “Where are you?”

She’d have to bend the truth. In a hotel room with my boss’s ex-girlfriend who is in the middle of a complicated coming out didn’t sound so good or mature.

“I went with Sean to his parents’ house. Long story, and I swear I’m going to tell you all of it.” Most of it. “We were done early, and I thought we could hang out for a bit.”

“Sure we can. He wasn’t a jerk to you in any way, was he?” Vicky sounded suspicious.

“No, of course not,” Caitlyn hurried to say. “I’ll text you the address, and you come get me at noon? Thank you so much!”

“I’ll be there. Can’t wait to see you.”

“Me too. Bye.”

She had to make another important call, but for that, she needed to wait, get her head straight. Truth be told, Caitlyn wasn’t sure she wanted to make it. She might have no choice, but first, she had even more urgent matters to deal with:

From behind that door, she heard crying. Caitlyn tossed the phone aside and went to check on Molly.

“It’s late,” she said softly upon entering the bathroom. “You should try to get some sleep.”

Molly sat on the edge of the tub, clad in the robe that came with the room. Her hair was still damp, and she was shivering.

“Yeah, good luck with that.
