As soon as she climbed in the front seat Anna said, “Is that your boyfriend, Beka?”

“He’s not my boyfriend, Anna. He’s just a friend from school.”

“But you have flowers,” she sang.

“We’re good friends,” I said.

Anna leaned back on the seat and looked out the window. Would she even bring it up to our dad? I weighed my options.

“Anna, I’d rather you not mention Mark to Dad if that’s all right,” I said.

“How come?”

I shrugged. “Well, because Dad’s going to meet Mark real soon. It’s kind of like a surprise.”

She crinkled her nose. “Why is it a surprise?”

“It just is, so don’t say anything, okay?”

“Okay.” She looked back at the window, and I took a deep breath. So far so good.

Dad went down to his workshop after dinner, and after I had finished the dishes, I followed him down. Paul was out with friends but Lucy and Anna, who had talked only about her riding at dinner, were watching a movie in the family room.

“Hey Butterfly,” he said when I came down the stairs. I sat near the bottom of the stairs and watched him sanding a piece of wood. “Do you need to talk?” He kept sanding but turned to sit on an old metal stool so he could see me. The sound of the sanding sent shivers through me.

“I guess so.”

He stopped sanding and laid the piece of wood and the sandpaper on the workbench. I looked down at my socks.

“Well, it’s kind of about this dating thing.” I glanced up. His expression hadn’t changed, but he gestured slightly for me to continue. “Well, I guess I need to have you meet Mark to see if it’s okay if we date.” I looked back at my shoes, but I heard the stool creak as he shifted his weight.

“How about next Sunday after church? He can come over to lunch.”

“With everybody here? I don’t want to get into a big family thing. I just need you to meet him, right?”

“Okay, then after lunch.”

“That’s better.” I started to get up.

“Beka, wait. I need you to help me understand what’s going on. I thought you were more interested in Josh. What’s going on with Mark?”

“Josh is moving away, Dad. He’s nice but he’s leaving. I’d like to date someone who’ll actually be in this state.”

“I can understand that. But dating isn’t just some fun activity to do on the weekends; it’s a process we use to choose the person we’re supposed to be with.”

“I don’t want to get married. I just want you to let me date.”

“I know. But dating is risky. You could get hurt. I don’t want you to get hurt. If I had my way we wouldn’t even be having this conversation.”

“I’m almost seventeen. Lots of kids started dating a long time ago.”

“I know. But God has an opinion about who you spend your time with, and who you date, and all of those things. Do you think God wants you to date Mark, or Josh, or anybody at all right now?”

“I don’t know.
