There are usually weight limitations, too, so that the contest is more difficult than a heavy robot pushing a light robot out of the ring. Instead, robots “trick” their opponents by using lights that confuse sensors, and magnets and suction to stay in place. Robots can also split into several parts once the contest starts. However, any robot part that travels outside the ring loses the round for the robot.

Judges set a time limit for each round. They may choose to end a round if robots don’t touch, become locked together, or if a time limit passes. In the event of a tie, a judge may declare the lighter robot the winner.
