CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

The Spadena House, Beverly Hills, California, United States

The next room Rose entered felt as though she’d stepped through the folds of time. She wasn’t sure, but the furnishings of the small open living area she saw around her seemed dated. The upholstery on the furniture and the wallpaper seemed like it belonged in a place from before the turn of the century, roughly sixty to eighty years earlier.

A boy with brown hair sat at a coffee table coloring a picture. He looked up when loud voices sounded from another room. The child tensed, threw down his crayon, and tugged his knees to his chest.

Rose instantly felt sadness for the scared little child and wanted to console him, but she didn’t think that’s how these memories worked. The people in them couldn’t see her. They weren’t even real anymore—just ghosts from the past.

“You baby him!” a man screamed from the other room behind the living area. Rose guessed it was the kitchen based on the sounds of clinking objects like plates or utensils being moved or put away. “You encourage this magical business even though you know it’s going to destroy our family!”

“I am a magician!” a woman screamed. “How can I forget who I am or who my son is!”

“Because you married me after his father died and you know I’m a mortal,” the man growled back. “I can’t see magic. I don’t even understand it. I forget about it until you constantly remind me.”

“I have to, or you don’t get what’s happening around you!” the woman fired angrily.

Rose glanced at Elvis. “This is after the Great War but before Aunt Liv made it so mortals could see magic again. They are still spelled not to know it exists.”

Elvis nodded. “D. Serviss’ mother and he are magicians. His stepfather was a mortal, though.”

Rose sucked in a breath, putting it all together. “No wonder he was willing to help my mother. He probably didn’t think mortals and magicians belonged together. He probably agreed with her that I was a mistake.”

Elvis looked sympathetic. “You aren’t…”

“Just get out!” the woman yelled. “Just stay away from us if you think we’re freaks!”

“You are a freak!” the man hollered from the other room. “And your son is a problem. He’s the reason that we can’t have a normal life.”

“He’s special,” the woman replied. “You wouldn’t understand.”

“I don’t understand, and I’m tired of this!” the man bellowed. “I am leaving, but I will be back, and when I am, you better not do anything to set me off again…or else…”

A door slammed, shaking the house, making the young boy jump.

Rose tensed, listening as racing footsteps approached from the back room. A woman with stringy brown hair and a puffy red face materialized, rushing into the living area. She looked all around, seeming to try and locate her son. Her eyes connected with D. Serviss cowering beside the couch.

“Oh, there you are,” she said, crouching down and scooping him up in her arms. “I’m so sorry you had to hear that.
