It was still dark, cooler out and humid when he left his building. On the walk to the gym, thoughts of his goals and desires swirled through his mind. Excitement about school foremost, he knew heâd still find the time to work for his father; the dichotomy that although being around Harold was mentally abusive, Jack loved the work.
Before Jack was born, Harold bought a block of apartment buildings needing renovation. During the process, he discovered that he had a talent for pinpointing what tenants wanted and who would ultimately live in that neighborhood. The real estate venture segued into a demographic research company where he could use his gift of figuring out exactly what kind of residential building should go where and who would end up living there.
Jack worked for him through college and found that he was good at it, too, or more specifically, knew where to find people who were good at it. With Haroldâs blessing, Jack would form his own company, Harold fielding clients to Jackâs downtown office and keeping the uptown clients for himself. Eventually, Jack would concentrate on historic renovation.
As the first rays of the sun sent light between the buildings on the walk to the gym, it illuminated the architecture of the old brownstones along the way. Flyers stapled to a telephone pole caught his eye, advertising entertainment for the upcoming weekend, a play off Broadway, help wanted for a dog walking service, and a tour company offering the vacation of the lifetime.
âI love it here,â he said out loud. âI never want to leave New York, even for a vacation.â
Continuing on to the gym, the memory of Ashton meeting him there the previous Friday amused Jack. Unable to keep the sneer off his face when he walked through the door, Ashtonâs disapproval was clear.
âWhy would you work out at a sty like this when you have that beautiful gym back at the mansion? Your father spared no expense for you and Bill to have the best equipment.â
âMy father is there,â heâd answered. âIâd rather work out at a sty.â
âPoint taken,â Ashton said. âSorry.â
The anticipation of parlaying his heartâs desire into a paying endeavor thrilled and motivated Jack. Those thoughts sufficiently blocked out Bianca, and Genevieve, and even his father. In the future heâd learn to deal with the guilt women instilled in him by buying them off, and his father heâd continue to ignore.
