Chapter 8
YOUR YOKO:
INSTANT BAD KARMA
Is there someone in your life who:
• Brings you down?
• Often talks you into making poor decisions?
• Brings out your worst qualities?
• Gets you into trouble?
• Causes you to spend frivolously?
• Helps to alienate you from your friends and family?
In Beatleology, that person is known as your Yoko.
Much has been made of Yoko Ono’s influence on John and her contribution to the breakup of the Beatles. In Beatle mythology, she is often cited as ruining John both artistically and spiritually. Beatleology borrows from this legend to create the concept of a Yoko. While Yoko is not considered a major sign in Beatleology, she nonetheless has an important role in Beatleology.
Your Yoko is defined as someone who brings you down, who steers you in a self-destructive direction, who pushes you toward your dark side and nurtures your base instincts. Your Yoko can be anyone, and often changes throughout the course of your life. For example, in fifth grade, Billy Jenkins, the class clown, encouraged you to act inappropriately and ignore your social studies work. He was your Yoko. In high school, it would have never occurred to you to skip third period and take a bong rip in the parking lot if it weren’t for your Yoko. And you would have probably finished college if your Yoko boyfriend hadn’t bought cheap condoms, and now, just like John, you have a Yoko spouse.
Identifying your Yoko is not always easy. It requires discipline and self-reflection. Ask yourself, “Who is currently bringing me down and pushing me in the wrong direction? Yet, I’m strangely drawn to this person.” If not carefully identified, your Yoko can ruin your life. No matter what your sign in Beatleology, a Yoko can be a destructive force. Yokos are unique from person to person. My Yoko will not be the same as yours. In fact, you may be a Yoko yourself.
Identifying your Yoko is often difficult because, subconsciously, you don’t want to admit this particular person is destroying your life. Just like an alcoholic doesn’t want to admit he has a problem with booze, many of us don’t want to admit we have a problem with our Yoko. This is partly why people stay in bad or abusive relationships. It is hard to recognize that a loved one is, in fact, hurting you. When trying to find your Yoko, it is best to close the door on denial.
One central tenet of Beatleology is to quickly identify your Yoko and minimize his or her negative influence on your life. Simply recognizing your Yoko and eliminating him or her from your life is not enough. If, for example, you divorce your Yoko husband and move to Poughkeepsie, your troubles are not over. A new Yoko will appear. Just as God must always have Satan, a Yoko will always exist in your life. It’s not your Yoko’s relationship to you; it’s your relationship to your Yoko.
Yoko Ono’s Life
Yoko Ono was born in Tokyo in 1933 to an aristocratic family who made their fortune in the Japanese banking industry.
