Chapter Fifteen – Stellan

The moonlight filtered through the treetops above, dappling the forest floor in silvers and grays. An ethereal glow lit the glade, shadows flickering and dancing as the branches swayed in the breeze. Stellan swallowed hard, his throat tightening as Mia gazed up at the sky in wonder.

He stood a few steps away from her, nerves and longing warring within him. He wanted nothing more than to reach out and pull her close, to feel the warmth of her body against his. But first, he had to show her the truth.

If fate had brought them together, then surely Mia would accept him for who he was.

For who we are. His bear was filled with confidence, certain that Mia would never turn away from them.

Would never abandon them.

That was his deep-rooted fear. As much as Stellan was afraid that the shifter sickness might take him from his mate, there was a much deeper internal wound that had never healed.

He was scared that his mate would leave him, abandon him, just as his father had.

If that happened, Stellan would not survive.

“It’s beautiful here,” Mia whispered. She turned to face him, her eyes gleaming in the moonlight. “Thank you for bringing me, but I don’t believe this is what you wanted to show me. Is it?” There was a note of hope in her voice, as if she’d be happy if this was it.

Stellan opened his mouth, but he couldn’t speak. Maybe he should have waited. Mia had been through enough tonight, and now he was about to pile more stress on.

His bear growled gently in the back of his mind, urging him to show her his true self. Trust in fate.

Steeling himself, Stellan met Mia’s gaze. “No, I have something to show you, something more...” he hesitated, willing his heart to stop racing. “I need you to trust me.”

Mia’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of uncertainty passing through them. But she stood firm, her voice filled with curiosity as she said, “I’m listening.”

Stellan took a deep breath and released it slowly. You can do this.

You can do this, his bear agreed. Just as countless other shifters before us have revealed their true selves to their true loves.

“I’m not like other men, Mia.” He clenched his fists, squashing down the panic that threatened to overtake him. He focused on Mia’s steady, unwavering presence, drawing strength from her.

“I already know that.” Mia tore her gaze from the moon and locked eyes with him. “And I don’t believe you brought me all the way out here just to tell me that either, Stellan.”

Smart and perceptive, his bear said.

“No, I didn’t.” Stellan shook his head. “What I want to show you is something more...magical.”

“Magical.” A small smile played across her lips. Did she think he was teasing her? “Then you have picked the perfect setting.”

And Mia is our perfect mate, his bear said, eager to meet her in the flesh. And fur.

“Please, promise me you won’t run, Mia,” he implored nervously, his voice barely above a whisper.
