Three Minutes Before The Murder

“Hey!” Gabe barked after Dan’s retreating back. “Where the fuck are you going?” But the producer was ignoring Gabe, again, which was just typical, and he disappeared out of the kitchen. Gabe heard the back door slam and he felt a stab of rage. Dan had ruined everything, and now when he was confronted, he had the audacity to run away?

“I’ll get him,” Emily said as she took off after Dan. Gabe bit back a snide remark, because of all the people in the room, Emily Griel had been the only one to actually be honest with him. He could cut her the tiniest bit of slack, even if she was Dan Sebring’s lapdog. Maybe when Dan was finally fired, she’d take over his job, but Gabe didn’t imagine she’d be very good at it.

The situation was annoying, but it did give Gabe a chance to turn to the only other man in the kitchen and monopolize his attention. “John,” Gabe said, as calmly as he could muster. “You can see how this is bullshit.”

John Balsinger looked over at Gabe with a frown. “I will not have this conversation without Dan present.”

“Really?” Gabe felt his anger rise up again, and for a brief moment, he even thought about breaking John’s geriatric nose. “Really. After all this time, you can’t even defend me against false allegations?”

“Dan has a fairly compelling case for your removal,” John replied flatly. “As much as I’ve stood by you the past few years, Gabriel, your erratic behavior has been starting to reflect on the studio. If we let Dan go public with this, then you risk other models coming forward and making the same accusations.”

Gabe’s throat constricted. “And your solution is to just let him kick me out to the curb based on what’s obviously a lie?”

“It is the simplest option.” John replied. “And the most beneficial for your future in this industry.”

Gabe threw his hands up into the air. “Unbelievable.” He snarled. “Fucking unbelievable. I’ve been telling you for months that Ry Thompson is a fucking psycho. Months, John. And you have brushed me off. And then Dan pulls this shit out of his ass…”

He heard the back door open, but the footsteps that approached the kitchen were too light to be Dan, barely audible over the party. Just Emily, then. That was confirmed when she rounded the corner, looking like she’d just seen a ghost but holding it together as best she could. Gabe felt no pity for her. She’d picked her side. And speaking of her side…

“Where the fuck is Dan?” Gabe demanded. Emily didn’t answer, so Gabe pressed harder. “Where the fuck is he, Emily? Where is the son of a bitch?”

“Dan is handling another matter,” Emily replied flatly, slipping effortlessly into her business voice. “You will be dealing with me.”

“Bullshit!” Gabe roared as he slammed his fist on the countertop, ignoring the way John winced. “What is more important than this? Who fucking died?”
