The drive to Tyler, Texas, took Shelby about seven hours. She found a well-lit hotel, parked under one of the lights, and went inside to book a room. The hotel receptionist was nothing like Kim, so soon Shelby was missing her new friend. When she got to her room, she latched the door, unpacked her suitcase, and took a quick shower.

She peered out her window at the Mustang. The car appeared to be okay, and so did she, but she had an uneasy feeling that she was being watched. She blew it off and made her way to the bed. She took her phone out and started browsing through her social media accounts. She laughed when she came across a picture Carter had posted. He was sitting in their apartment living room in the middle of his shattered trophies. He had captioned the photo with the words “bitch destroyed my stuff.” It looked as though he was seeking sympathy from his friends, but instead, everyone was posting comments about how he’d probably deserved it. Some people said it was about time Shelby had left him and that she was way out of his league. Shelby laughed as she read through the various comments.

At ten o’clock, she plugged her cell phone in, turned the lamp off, and lay there in the darkness, unable to sleep. She closed her eyes and tried to recall the night at the truck stop. She had so many unanswered questions.

Who was the man in the box truck who kidnapped me? Who was the other man who saved me? Was he the one who cleaned me up in the bathroom, or did I clean myself up? How did I get in my car? Why did he just leave me there? Where was the box truck when I awoke?
