UNDERGOING ANGIOPLASTY AND STENTING

Angioplasty is typically performed in a cath lab as part of a catheterization procedure, described in detail in Chapter 4. Although it takes place in a hospital, angioplasty is not considered major surgery and takes just 30 minutes to two hours. It is not considered painful, but you may feel some pressure as the catheter is threaded through your blood vessels, and you may experience some soreness at the insertion site following the procedure. Each procedure varies depending on the patient’s particular condition and needs, but the following steps are common:

The procedure does not require anesthesia, but you may be given a sedative to help you relax.

An area on your groin or arm is numbed before the doctor inserts a plastic tube called a catheter into an artery.

The doctor then threads the catheter through the blood vessel using a special monitor to see the catheter until it reaches the blocked coronary artery.

Once the catheter is in place, a thin wire is inserted and advanced to the blockage.

Next, a tube with an expandable balloon is passed through the catheter. In some cases, a collapsed stent is positioned over the balloon.

The balloon is inflated, pushing the plaque against the walls of the artery to widen it.

The balloon is deflated and removed from your body.

If a stent is used, it remains in place to prop open the artery. To prevent bleeding, a healthcare professional will apply pressure to the insertion site or use a suture or plug to close the groin puncture site to prevent bleeding.

You will need to lie on your back for several hours after the procedure to avoid bleeding.
