Today is literally the longest day of school known to man. Knowing at the end of the day I'd be able to find out whatever's hidden in that box was too intense to ignore, even for a few more hours. It just lingered in my head the whole time. I don't think I paid attention to a single note that I took, or a lecture that I had to sit through. By the time lunch rolls around, I’m an hot mess. I still have one class to go and I don't even bother to stop for food, just waiting anxiously for my next class to start. Sophia and I could eat after the bank. Because at this point, my stomach couldn't handle it anyway.

My friends have been texting me on and off all day. Abby, Cole, and Adam especially sending funny notes and memes my way, but it doesn’t help distract me much. If it were up to me, I’d have skipped today, but Sophia didn't want me skipping class for this. Not that it mattered in the end because I retained nothing.

The longer the professor drags on about genetics, the more I want to scream. Each glance at the clock shows it’s moving at a snail’s pace. When he finally calls class to an end, I throw my notebook in my bag and rush out before anyone else can even process his words. He gives me a startled look as I rush by but I don’t bother to offer an explanation.

We planned to meet at home, so I rush to my car. I have to force myself to not drive like a damn maniac all the way there. It’s probably best she’s driving to Starbrooke or I’d end up killing us both.

I’d be lying to myself if I said it was just the fact we’re going to the bank, but it’s more about going back to Starbrooke in general. It’s my hometown, the place I grew up, the place I lost my family, friends, and my life as I knew it. It felt like a never-ending list of things and reasons that kept me from wanting to go to Starbrooke ever again, yet I was willingly driving right back there now.

But finding the answers in that box would be worth it all. There’s no way my dad hadn’t hidden away something important, otherwise why would the key have been hidden like it was. And not just the usual things like banknotes and titles, but things like the biggest secrets he uncovered and needed to keep safe.

Driving through town as smoothly as I manage is nothing short of a miracle. I don’t get stopped at any red lights or get stuck behind any slow drivers. But I don’t bother to celebrate too early. If Sophia’s in the middle of something it’ll take even longer, but she’ll likely take one look at my face and drop everything.

“I'm home!” I yell out before sprinting upstairs. I unceremoniously drop my school stuff on my bed and grab my tablet and jacket before heading back down.
