Let us imagine two identical trains A and B which have a length of 1000 m when they are stationary.

Now suppose they are traveling in opposite directions at a relative speed of 0.9c.

As they pass each other in parallel tracks, the passengers in A will see B contracted to 436 m, and the passengers in B will see A contracted to 436 m.

Now, suppose the engineer of each train splashes paint on the caboose of the other train as he passes it. Which train will be splashed first?

Event I : Engineer of A splashes caboose of B.

Event II: Engineer of B splashes caboose of A.

Now, train A will see a shortened train B. So the engine of A will pass the caboose of B before the engine of B passes the caboose of A (from A’s perspective).

So from A’s perspective Event I will take place first. Some time later, the engine of B will have reached the caboose of A and so Event II will take place with the engineer of B splashing the caboose of A.
