CHAPTER TEN
Donald didn’t expect the Brig to be so busy on a Sunday
night, but the place was packed with guys looking for one last
bit of excitement before the workweek began. Donald’s gaze
roamed over the crowd and he actually saw a couple of guys he
knew. Both were guys he had tricked with before he met Mark
and he quickly looked away from their faces, not wanting to be
recognized, not wanting to talk to anyone.
What was he doing here anyway? He knew: more oblivion.
He hoped Mark didn’t see this as a betrayal, but it seemed like
the only balm to his pain was sex. For those brief, intense
moments, he could forget about what had happened to them.
He could put on a back burner the ache in his ribs, the scabs on
his head, and the crushing reminder that he had lost everything
that mattered to him. In that back room, it was dark and
anonymous, just the kind of place Donald needed to be right
now, even though he knew, deep down, that the connections he
made there would only fill him with more emptiness. But while
they were taking place, his mind and his body went somewhere
else, reacting biologically to the feel of warmth, wetness, and
tightness around his cock.
Would this be his future then? Burying his pain in sex,
becoming a man who no longer felt beyond the tactile? Donald
shoved this line of thinking down into a dark cavern in his
brain, with a weak promise to examine it more closely in the
light of day.
He glanced furtively at the bartender, tonight a man about
his own age, wearing leather bib overalls and no shirt. His hair
was thinning and he was painfully thin; exposing his chest and
protruding ribs did him no favors. His cheeks were sunken in.
He had probably been at his vocation for years.
Donald wondered, slipping through the crowd, if he would
one day soon end up looking like this man. He didn’t want to

make eye contact because he didn’t want to order any alcohol;
tomorrow, he would return to work for the first time in six
weeks and he wanted to be at least somewhat fresh, his mind
unclouded by alcohol fumes and vapors.
Like home base, the portal to the back room, dark and at the
same time welcoming, rose up before him. Donald slipped
inside and it was like moving into another world. Dark
silhouettes moved in the darkness. There was the smell of beer,
the sounds of slurping, muffled groans. Someone dropped a
beer bottle and it crashed and shattered on the cement floor.
No one laughed and the activity going on back here continued
uninterrupted.
Donald situated himself beneath a barred window that
looked out only on blackness and waited. Soon enough,
someone was on his knees before him, tugging at the buttons
his 501s. Donald closed his eyes, eager for the warmth of an
anonymous mouth to surround him. He didn’t care what his
partner looked like, only what he could bring.
Lips and tongue encircled him and Donald threw back his
head, wanting the moment, the pure physical sensations to last,
and, at the same time, to be over quickly. The man was an
expert at cocksucking and he took Donald deep into his throat,
squeezing then releasing.
