Chapter 19

“You want some help with that, baby?” I ask Eva, taking hold of her waist as she stands in the kitchen peeling an onion later that evening.

“Can you cook?”

“No, but I have other skills.” Her hair is pulled back in a ponytail, her neck exposed. My mouth is merciless. The knife in her hand slows and stills as I taste my way from the base of her neck to her ear.

“You do,” she agrees, swallowing hard. I pull her hips into mine and her head rolls back onto my shoulder. “But...” she says, swallowing again, “if you want food, you’re going to have to leave.”

“Leave?” She wants me to leave? She nods, her fingers scrunching up the front of my jeans.

“Go play with the girls or something. I can’t concentrate with you here and I’ll cut my own finger off.” Oh, that kind of leave.

“Are you sure you want me to go?” I spin her around in my arms and take half a step forward, pressing her between the worktop and my body.

“If I wasn’t so hungry, I’d say no, and finger be damned, but I am, so yes.”

I could convince her to let me stay. But I’m going to leave her wanting more.

“If you insist.” I sigh, giving her sad eyes. I lean in to brush my lips over hers, but her mouth parts and her hands move to my hair as her tongue slips inside, and she kisses me until I’m too turned on to think straight.

“You’re still here,” she teases as her hands trail over my back.

“I didn’t hear you complaining.”

“Never,” she says, kissing me one more time. “Now, please, go. Before I pass out from low blood sugar.”

I catch her hand at my waist and bring it to my lips for a tender kiss. I love the way she smiles when I do that. I wink at her before making for the living room.

“What are we playing, girls?” I ask, smiling broadly as I take in the scene before me. The girls have put on frilly skirts that can only be described as tutus, fairy wings and tiaras.

“Fairy pwincesses,” Mae informs me, twirling around and around, while Summer is bent over the toy box, rummaging through the contents.

“Hewre it is!” she exclaims, holding up a sparkling silver wand topped with a star. “Do you want swilver or pink?” she calls to Mae.

“Pink, pease.”

“You can be swilver, Will,” Summer says, handing me the wand.

“Thank you.” I chuckle, twirling it in my fingers.

“Hawng on. You need wings.”

When I am all fairy-fied, minus the tutu, because unfortunately it didn’t fit, Summer frowns and wrinkles her nose. And then gasps. “I fowgot the face paint!”

She rushes over to the sideboard and pulls open a cupboard. “Hwere it is!” she calls happily. She pushes the cupboard closed and dashes over to me to leave the face paint in my safekeeping whilst she collects water to wash the sponge.

I sit on the sofa, dressed like a bloody fairy with wire digging
