The Building

The Palau Nacional on Montjuïc was built between 1926 and 1929, with the objective to be the main building of the Barcelona International Exposition of 1929, for an exhibition of Spanish Art called "Art in Spain", with more than 5,000 works from all over the country.

The building is a work of Eugenio Cendoya and Enric Cata, under the supervision of Pere Domenech I Roura, after the rejection of the initial draft by Puig I Cadafalch and Guillem Busquets. It shows a main symmetrical facade, with a central body that excels and two side parts. The central body crowns the whole facade with a dome of dominant roman style and is accompanied by itself to the sides by two smaller domes. The four corners of the grand chamber are composed of some square towers that are integrated into the composition of the exterior facade.

The work has a surface area of 32,000 m² and is in a classical style, inspired by the Spanish renaissance. It has two side bodies of a rectangular base and one with a square base, with a large dome in the central part. The waterfalls and fountains of the outside staircase of the Palau would be a work of Carles Buigas. In the same period, there were placed nine large projectors that still today emit some intense beams of light that they write the name of the city in the sky.

In his program, it was also referred to the opening ceremony of the exhibition art in Spain, presided over by King Alfonso XIII and the Queen Victoria Eugenia.

The decoration of the Palau style (contrary to the classicism of l'structure) belongs to several artists, such as the sculptors Enric Casanovas, Josep Dunyach, Frederic Marés and Josep Llimona, and the painters Francesc d'Assis Gali, Josep de Togores, Manuel Humbert, Josep Obiols, Joan Colom and Francesc Labarta. From 1934 is the headquarters of the MNAC.
