It’s getting on toward dusk when I come to. I’m back in the ditch and in a world of hurt. Doc Jay is hovering over me looking worried and fiddling with some battle dressings he’s applied to my right shoulder and the right side of my head.

“We came looking when we heard the shooting down by the other end of the ditch,” he says and points to a body he’s laid out next to Wiley. “That’s Ellerman. He’s the only one we found besides you and the dead gook.”

I ask how bad I’m hit, and he shrugs. “Lucky as ever, Gunny. One round took out a chunk of your shoulder and another put a big crease in your scalp.” It feels a lot worse, but I’m not complaining as the CO scrunches over to take a look.

“There’s good news, Gunny. They finally managed to get most of the battalion ashore over on West Beach. There’s a hell of a fight still going on…” He pauses and nods toward the distance where we can hear a steady exchange of fire. “We’ve got something like two hundred Marines on the island, and I’m finally in contact with the CP. They tell me there’s more air inbound from the carrier. Golf Company is supposed to be sweeping in our direction.”

Finally, a little order of the chaos. Maybe we can link up with them and sweep the remaining KR off this side of the island.

“We’re out of it,” the CO says pointing at the row of exhausted and wounded Marines in the ditch. Only three or four are able to pop up occasionally and fire a round or two into the jungle. “That’s just to keep ʼem at bay,” the Skipper says. “Most of the ones we’ve been fighting all day have moved off to reinforce their buddies on the other side. Word is they’re sending a couple of Jolly Greens to extract us before dark.”

He cuts a look at Doc Jay and checks my wounds. “You OK, or should I assign somebody to give you a hand when the birds get here?”

I tell him not to worry about me and ask about the missing machinegun team. As far as I’m concerned, we shouldn’t be thinking about leaving until we know their status. The CO assures me a full accounting will be made. We won’t be leaving anyone behind on this island. That’s as it should be. Doc Jay hits me with a syrette and I mellow out thinking about a number of times in Vietnam when we risked everything, even took additional casualties just to ensure we didn’t leave another Marine—dead or alive—on the battlefield. It’s a Marine thing, a tenet of the faith, and often the only comfort we had in combat.
