Schools that participate in federal student aid programs are required to provide potential students information pertaining to the cost of attending and to provide a net price calculator on their websites. Students can also access the College Scorecard (https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/), provided by the U.S. Department of Education’s College Affordability and Transparency Center, to help in making more informed decisions regarding an institution’s value and affordability.

Prior to applying for Federal Student Aid, it is important to understand what it is, how it works, and what you would want to accept. Federal Student Aid, or Title IV Programs as they are categorized, comes in three forms: work-study, loans, and grants. For spouses or dependent children using transferred GI Bill benefits, loans are usually not necessary. In fact, it is best to avoid them at all costs. In many cases, spouses will have access to MyCAA, scholarships, and state/federal grants. Loans have to be repaid with interest, and you should think carefully before accepting them.

The federal Pell Grant money should be the goal for most undergraduate students. Pell Grant money does not need to be repaid and is awarded for first-time bachelor’s or associate’s degree-seeking students only. In certain instances, students might receive a Pell Grant award if they are attending a postbaccalaureate teacher certification program. The maximum Pell Grant award is currently set at $5,815 for the 2016–2017 academic year. That amount is based upon maximum financial need and a full-time rate of pursuit.
