Chapter 19

Back in Simone’s hotel room, Sam said, “It sounds like Leslie James could be in charge, instead of Barlow.” He turned to J.T. “Did you find any information on him?”

J.T. looked up from his computer. “No, he seems to be a ghost.”

“Did you go to property records? I’m wondering if he has another residence besides the lodge. It appeared to be a vacation home.”

“I’ll check on that.”

“What’re you thinking?” Lauren asked Sam.

“Since the news about the undersecretary’s death, I’ve had this nagging feeling that Barlow wouldn’t have been up to that. Seems unlikely he’d murder a government official just to demonstrate the Cassius capability.”

“Yeah, I wondered about that myself,” Simone said. “He’s a creep, but that’s probably over the top even for him.”

“You think James might have some sort of leverage over Barlow?” Lauren asked Sam.

“Could be. He also might have some weaknesses we can leverage. If we could get into his home and go through his personal files, we might find something.”

J.T. sighed. “I didn’t find any homes under his name in Florida, but I’ve got some ideas.”

Simone ordered up gin and mixers from room service. When it arrived, each made a drink. Lauren, though seemingly calm, downed two in the next twenty minutes.

“Okay,” J.T. said, “I think this might be his place. It’s near Coral Gables.” He turned the computer so the others could view the screen. “The owner is listed as one of the subsidiaries of Undergate.”

The image of a Mediterranean mansion filled the screen. After everyone had seen it, J.T. brought up an aerial view that indicated James had a dock on the water behind his house. “He might have security staff inside.”

“That shouldn’t be a problem,” Sam said. “The darts will work if we catch them by surprise.”

Lauren got up for another drink. “The meeting on his yacht is tomorrow, so he might be down here already. Maybe some of his men are with him. Why don’t we go over to the marina and see if he’s arrived yet. It’s just a few miles from here.”

A half-hour later, they rode by the place. Yachts, cruisers, and houseboats filled virtually every slip. Sam suggested they might get a better view from the upper floor of a building close by. He drove to a hotel about quarter-mile away, parked near the entrance, and got out with the field glasses. Lauren went with him, and they strode through the lobby to the elevator and ascended to the seventh floor. A space at the end of the hall, directly outside the stairwell, offered a view from a large window overlooking the marina. Lauren put the binoculars to her eyes and scanned over the vessels below. Though dark out, the docks were well lit.

After a couple of minutes, she said, “I think I see it. It’s bigger than any of the other boats.”

She handed him the glasses and told him where to look. He gazed through the lenses until he spotted it. Nobody seemed to be moving about or sitting out on deck.
