Chapter 8

COBY’S NAP ended almost as quickly as it had started, and then he was off again. Daniel worried that it was going to be too much for Richard, but the big guy spent part of the afternoon on the floor with Coby, playing with cars and blocks.

Daniel was still trying to figure Richard out, and so far he was having one hell of a time getting a read on him. Richard seemed to understand about the notes and was nice enough when Daniel had freaked and thought that Richard might have sent them. That had been the stupidest conclusion he’d ever jumped to. And now he was playing with Coby, which was fucking adorable, especially after Coby knocked down Richard’s tower for the tenth time, giggling like an idiot.

“Maybe we should go on home and leave you alone,” Daniel offered.

Coby looked up, his lower lip already quivering, and damned if Richard didn’t have a touch of that puppy-dog look too.

“We can order some pizza or something. Terrance and Gerome will probably be over, and we can make a night of it.” He was already up, grabbing a couple of takeout menus and handing them to him. Daniel took them. “We can order from wherever you like.”

“Or we could cook,” Daniel offered. He and Coby didn’t eat out much. It was a luxury they couldn’t often afford, and he wanted Coby to eat better than fried food.

“If you want to,” Richard agreed and motioned to the kitchen. “I’m not sure what I have for a serious dinner. Mostly I have stuff for snacking and things. I eat at the bar a lot.”

Daniel went to see what he had and pulled out some pasta. He found some canned tomatoes and garlic and spices in a prepackaged rack in one of the cupboards. Richard also had some frozen hamburger that he pulled out to thaw. “What do you think of spaghetti? Coby loves it, and I can make something simple for him and a really good sauce for us.” Daniel even managed to find an onion and got chopping.

“Daddy, I crying,” Coby said.

Daniel got a tissue and wiped Coby’s eyes. “I know. It’s the onions. They make me cry too, but that will go away pretty soon.” He got them in a pan with some butter and started cooking. Coby and Richard continued running cars around the floor as Gerome and Terrance joined them. Daniel greeted both of them, and they peered over his shoulder.

“Dang, you can cook? Do you want to be my boyfriend?” Terrance asked after inhaling the scent, and then turned to Richard. “Do you want us to stay?”

“Of course,” Daniel answered. “I’m making enough for an army.” He loved to cook. There was something rewarding and kind of soothing about putting ingredients together and having them come out just right. Of course, the opposite was also true, and when things didn’t turn out, he usually got upset for a couple of reasons, the biggest being that he didn’t have the resources to remake whatever he had screwed up.
