Chapter Five

Nova

* * *

After changing into a pastel-pink, boho-chic, ankle-length dress, I knocked on the door to Mr. Christakos’s bungalow. “Hello, Mr. Christakos. It’s me, Nova. I’m here to take you to lunch.”

He opened the door wearing a linen suit and looking even more handsome than he had before. “Your little folder informed me of the dress code at The Royal. You forgot to tell me what I should wear, Nova.”

Extending my arm, I said, “Ah, but I left all that information for you to read, sir. Please, let’s be on our way.”

He looked at my arm for a moment before shaking his head. “I don’t do touching.”

Dropping my arm, I smiled at him anyway and tried not to let his words bother me. “I understand.”

Stepping back so he could exit the bungalow, I took a deep, silent breath, trying to relax. The man’s tension seemed to be contagious.

“Small talk and touching—two things I don’t do.” He walked in front of me as if he knew where we were going.

When he turned left instead of right, I had to intervene. “Perhaps you would like me to lead the way? If we go in that direction, it’ll be dinner time before we get to The Royal, sir.”

Stopping abruptly, he turned back to me. “So it’s on this side of the island? Okay.”

Stifling a laugh, I walked beside him. “Yes, it’s on this side of the island. By the notes I’ve read on your tastes in food, I do believe you will enjoy the meals Chef Alex makes at The Royal. He’s half-Greek and a quarter of his menu is Greek cuisine.”

He made a snorting noise. “As if all I’ll eat is Greek food. I travel all over the world. I’ve eaten many things you’ve never even heard of. I find it rather presumptuous of you to assume anything about my eating habits or favorite foods, Nova.”

My eyes wanted to roll so severely, they hurt. “You do remember you filled out a survey, letting us know all your likes and dislikes? But thank you for the instruction; I’ll remember not to rely on the information you provided to us.”

“If I recall correctly, my assistant filled that out—and she doesn’t know me all that well, outside of a work environment.” A genuine smile seemed to pull the corners of his chiseled lips. “And you’re welcome.”

“Noted. I will refrain from assuming anything about you, sir. I can assure you it will not happen again.” And I meant that, too. The man had an air about him that gave me the impression that he thought of himself as a king—or at the very least, a prince.

The smile faded as he quickened his pace. I found myself making long strides to keep up with him. I had no idea what the rush was, but I wasn’t going to say a word about it.

Arriving at the restaurant, he held the door open for me, which I found surprising. “Thank you, sir.” Nodding at the host, I said, “I’ve already reserved table six for us, Donny.
