Making Waterproof Barriers Last

When water begins to saturate a waterproof jacket (which occurs when the jacket’s pores get clogged with dirt and sweat), it’s time to reactivate its DWR coating by either machine washing or ironing.

To wash a jacket or shell, place it by itself in a washing machine set on cold water and a gentle cycle. Add a mild powder detergent like Dreft or Ultra Ivory Snow. Do not use liquid detergents or fabric softeners—both leave behind residues that impair DWR performance. Rinse twice to remove all the soap and dry in a standard dryer set on low or medium heat.

If washing fails to restore the DWR coating, run a warm iron over the fabric while on a low steam setting. The direct application of moderate heat will reactivate the DWR molecules inside the clothing.

Test a reactivated DWR coating by dripping water onto the garment. If the water beads up and rolls off the fabric, the coating is working. If the water soaks into the fabric, you need to try again or apply a new coating.
